17 Years of Free Advertising — and Minecraft Finally Launches an Affiliate Program

17 Years of Free Advertising — and Minecraft Finally Launches an Affiliate Program

Minecraft is a game that turns 17 in 2026 and still holds the title of the best-selling game in history with 350+ million copies sold. For all those years, millions of YouTubers, streamers, and content creators have been promoting the game for free. In June 2026, that finally changed: Minecraft launched its first affiliate program.

In this article, we break down how the product works, what has changed in the approach to creator monetization, how much you can earn, and why this launch reflects a broader trend in gaming.

How the Minecraft affiliate model works

The model is built on automation powered by impact.com. Each content creator receives a unique tracking link or QR code that can be added to videos, streams, or social media posts. When a user clicks the link and purchases something in the web version of the Minecraft Marketplace, the system records the action and credits a percentage.

The starting commission for creators is 5%. Earnings are credited for purchases of unique digital content, including in-game add-ons, skin packs, texture packs, maps, custom mini-games, and unique spawn points for survival mode.

Commission is also credited when a buyer pays with the in-game currency Minecoins for a product, however the standalone sale of Minecoins themselves is not monetized.

Affiliate commission is not paid for purchases of a Minecraft license, base character customization items, or Minecraft Realms server subscriptions. As a result, creator earnings are tied exclusively to driving content sales within the Marketplace.

Who can become a partner and how onboarding works

The registration form features an extensive list of categories, indicating that Microsoft expects more than just traditional influencers with large audiences to join the program. Applications are open to creators of written or video reviews, owners of coupon or bonus sites for gamers, and others.

After selecting a business model, creators are prompted to connect their promotional channels: websites, social media profiles, mobile apps, or podcast platforms. Once the traffic sources are reviewed by Microsoft moderators and the data is verified by the service, the affiliate gains access to a personal dashboard with analytics.

Technical terms and traffic restrictions

The program is currently focused exclusively on Tier-1 and major Tier-2 markets. Commission is only credited when the buyer is a user from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Canada, France, Australia, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Poland, the Netherlands, or Spain. No payouts are available for any other countries.

The system operates on a standard Last Click model, meaning the conversion is attributed to the creator whose link the user clicked last before making a purchase. The attribution window is 14 days — if a user clicks a link but decides to complete the purchase within two weeks, the creator still receives their percentage. Earned funds are held for one month, and payouts are made in USD within 20 days after the hold period ends.

Under the Media Partner Tracking Pixel clause in the general contract terms, Microsoft explicitly prohibits partners from placing their own conversion tracking pixels on the advertiser's side. This means real-time purchase data cannot be passed to third-party trackers — all analytics are handled exclusively within the impact.com dashboard. This also makes it difficult to set up automated campaign optimization in Facebook or Google Ads based on actual conversions.

The company has also fully protected itself against chargeback risks. If a buyer cancels an order or the system detects fraudulent activity, the developers can void up to 100% of credited commissions. The terms are not permanent, however — Microsoft reserves the right to change the rules or payout rates, with just one day's notice to partners.

The program is additionally governed by the public Affiliate Guidelines, which define the rules for using affiliate links, content disclosure requirements, and the list of actions that qualify for commission.

Technology backend and the franchise's media success

impact.com was chosen as the program's technology backend, automating creator discovery, technical tracking, precise click attribution, and payouts through its Creator and Performance modules. The launch comes against the backdrop of a major media surge for the franchise: "A Minecraft Movie" grossed over $960 million at the box office, and a campaign with McDonald's reached 100 markets, helping push Microsoft's revenue in Q3 of fiscal year 2026 up 18% to $82.9 billion.

The case clearly reflects a shift in how brands approach marketing. Large companies are gradually moving away from classic reach-based payments and transitioning to performance-based models tied to ROI. Software from impact.com turns influencer marketing into a predictable business channel, where every payout is automatically distributed within the platform's dashboard.

This opens up new opportunities for UGC creators: Marketplace add-on developers who have collectively earned over $500 million can now generate their own affiliate links for their products and share them with streamers in exchange for a percentage of sales.

An example of this approach can be seen on the X account of the Float Studios team. To promote their Village Cities map, the developers publish gameplay trailers and drive traffic to the Marketplace. With the new affiliate model, content creators can now scale sales and bring in external bloggers or media buyers for a percentage of revenue.

How creator commerce works in gaming

Minecraft holds its status as the best-selling game with over 350 million copies sold and a monthly active audience of over 200 million users. Previously, community activity on YouTube and Twitch grew organically and generated only brand awareness. The new program allows Microsoft to convert that traffic into a managed sales channel — gaming audiences place greater trust in content creator recommendations when searching for add-ons or maps through TikTok or Twitch.

The affiliate model closes this loop, allowing a creator to send users directly through a ready-made link, while developers only pay commission on an actual purchase. This integrates content and sales into a single system where rewards are tied exclusively to a confirmed result.

At the same time, this model opens up a completely white-hat niche for media buyers and content media outlets that can monetize traffic from TikTok reviews or Telegram channels through affiliate links to web Marketplace products.

Conclusions

Ultimately, Minecraft together with impact.com is shifting community monetization into a format where revenue is directly tied to results. Streamers, gaming media, and mod developers can now earn a direct percentage on every in-game order.

The platform fully automates this process, so instead of being paid for views, content creators receive transparent earnings based exclusively on real user purchases.
