Classic and Media — Two Main Approaches to Promoting Models in the OnlyFans Niche

Classic and Media — Two Main Approaches to Promoting Models in the OnlyFans Niche

Today we have a guest — the owner of an OnlyFans agency with years of experience, who continues his series of materials on how the adult business works. Read it, share it with friends! Subscribe to "Щоденник Онліфанщика" and read the article.

So, guys and girls, we've already covered how the adult industry differs from classic traffic arbitrage — you can read about it here: "OnlyFans vs Classic Traffic Arbitrage: What's the Difference", and also how the OnlyFans business model works in general, which you can also read here: "How an OnlyFans Agency Works: The Adult Content Business from an Owner's Perspective".

Today I want to break down the final topic in this trilogy — which has been running for half a year now — the two main promotion approaches in this niche and, consequently, how to monetize them: the classic method and media presence, or personal branding. We'll go through each option so you understand how it all works in practice, which approach suits whom, what the earning ceilings look like for each, and which one is ultimately worth pursuing.

What Promotion on OnlyFans Actually Looks Like

OnlyFans as a platform launched back in 2016, gained some traction in 2020, and went mainstream after 2022. I've been working in this space since 2019 — meaning I've witnessed roughly 80% of the platform's entire development, and I now have plenty of context to compare and share with you.

Back then, and still today, OnlyFans has no internal traffic (we're not counting basic recommendations and OnlyFans TV) — everyone on the platform comes from external sources. So the question of lead generation, acquisition, and promotion strategy for a model's OnlyFans profile has always been front and center.

There are two core promotion approaches when working with OnlyFans profiles — classic promotion and media-based promotion.

The biggest mistake people make when first getting into OnlyFans is not realizing that promotion in adult is fundamentally different from everything else. That's exactly why so many arbitrage teams fail to drive a decent volume of leads — either the cost is too high, or the audience isn't the right fit, or both at once. So the tips I'll break down below are worth keeping in your toolkit and testing across different scenarios.

The Classic Approach: Reddit, Twitter, SFS

Let's start with the classics — specifically, promotion methods and workflows that do NOT involve the media space in the traditional sense. No personal brand building, no long-term account development. This is lead generation "here and now."

Under this promotion method, I'd include driving traffic through the following platforms and techniques:

Reddit — a platform that allows you to spin up accounts for mass traffic pushing. On average, with this approach accounts live anywhere from 7 to 30 days; no one tries to preserve them — the more, the better. Traffic is driven through niche-specific subreddits, which allow you to bring in a highly warm, targeted, and paying audience.

Average ROI on this type of promotion starts at x5 and above.

Reddit traffic stats:

SFS traffic — this includes both manual and paid SFS, with the difference coming down to lead quality and volume.

SFS promotion is essentially cross-promotion between models on their OnlyFans accounts, resulting in a mass traffic flow from page A to page B. With the right model selection for this process, you can also achieve highly targeted, quality traffic with an ROI of x5 and above. But that's only with manual promotion.

If you go with standard paid SFS, the traffic is mediocre at best, with an ROI of x1.5–2 — though it's extremely cheap. A week of traffic typically costs just $150. So everyone finds their own path with SFS. Personally, I went manual — more money that way.

The last time I ran SFS was in March, as I shifted my focus toward media presence. Here are the most recent stats:

And the third classic method — Twitter + software.

Yes, X (Twitter) is alive again — the company officially confirmed the return of 18+ content to the platform, and on top of that, it will actively support the promotion of this type of content. The king is dead. Long live the king.

Post promotion with software:

Залив з X (Twitter) на Onlyfans
Залив з X (Twitter) на Onlyfans

Post promotion without software:

Залив з X (Twitter) на Onlyfans

The first option is classic organic promotion — purely through organic reach, hashtags, and consistent long-term account management, as well as purchasing shoutouts from other Twitter bloggers. This approach does grow reach and lead volume, but it takes a very long time and, I'd say, is not relevant in some scenarios — which is why software-based promotion is an option.

The general mechanics here are straightforward — there are developers who build custom software, which can be either bespoke for a specific agency (that's the setup at my agency) or, let's say, "template-based." Combined with manual account management, this gives us a fairly large asset on the page and, consequently, on the OnlyFans page.

The software operates on a "find somewhere to push the photo" principle — it publishes posts into the most popular trends at any given moment, and as a result, hundreds of thousands of people see our model, click through to her profile, and so on.

What's the difference between custom software and template-based software? With custom software, we solve the problem of broad audience targeting from Twitter, since we can choose which trends to post in, what niche to target, and so on.

Template-based software doesn't offer that flexibility. The upside of this type of promotion is that you pay for the software once and that's it — updates are rolled out as needed. Custom software costs between $2,500 and $5,000, with free updates included. Template-based software averages $300–$600 and comes with paid updates.

Summary on the Classic Format

Overall, these are the three core classic promotion methods with strong ROI and revenue potential. Many agencies stick to just one of the three — for example, a colleague of mine works exclusively with manual SFS, pulls in above-average revenue, and doesn't stress about it.

Then there are those who use all classic promotion methods (that's me) and still feel it's not enough — so they layer in additional methods, such as media buying.

Media Buying: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, PornHub.

Here things are much simpler and more straightforward. This promotion method is closer to what most people are familiar with and is more universal — even a general marketing specialist has a rough idea of how to work with an audience and move it from point A to point B.

In general, the media approach involves two development paths for a model: the first is building her into a porn star, but that doesn't really work well anymore; the second is building a personal brand around the model and crafting a specific persona from there. Most often, this means positioning her as an influencer who shares her photos. In both cases, all the core media promotion techniques are applied.

You definitely know some well-known porn actresses today — that's exactly what media presence means, but in the format of mainstream YouTube. In the OnlyFans format, it looks somewhat different.

Relevant platforms for building a media presence — Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, PornHub.

You can build your media presence either without the classic promotion method or alongside it, layering one on top of the other and getting insane multipliers that enable scale simply not achievable with the classic method alone. The concept is fairly simple:

And this needs to be done on every platform listed above. But there's one catch…

For a confident start with this method, you need advertising budgets roughly 5x larger than with the classic approach. That's why most people choose the first option to get off the ground and build their media presence later, once the agency is already established — which is exactly what I did, and I have no regrets. Doing it the other way around, as my experience shows, most often results in significant losses that may never turn profitable.

Comparison and Cost: Media Buying vs. Classic Approach

Now let's compare these two promotion methods across three key criteria:

  • entry cost for each promotion option;
  • payback speed — how long before your investment turns profitable;
  • ROI itself — what kind of revenue you can expect from each promotion method.

Let's start with the first point: what's the entry cost for each option. I'll use average market figures for good-quality traffic. You can always find cheaper, but I'm writing from my own experience.

To start promoting a model using the classic promotion method, you'll need the following budgets:

  • Reddit — from $500–$700 per month, with consumables, account management, and ad spend already included in that price. Pretty modest, right?
  • SFS — if you're buying shoutouts externally, that's from $400 per month, but you should understand that's a mediocre option at best; manual SFS starts at $1,000 and up. These prices, as with the first case, are all-inclusive, turnkey.
  • X (Twitter) — as I mentioned earlier, the template-based option starts at $300, and the custom one from $2,500. Overall, not that much, considering how much profit you can generate with the right approach.

So if you're making sensible investments, calculating everything properly, and have a clear roadmap for building your agency and developing your model, your investment should pay off by the second — or third at the latest — month. With the right approach, the total amount invested becomes secondary, because money invested correctly delivers strong results. And I want to emphasize: invested correctly — not in large quantities.

And to sum it up, the reasonable total cost of running a model on the classic promotion method is ~$1,200–1,500 per girl per month — but it's important to note that you don't need to front all the money at once, since most platforms offer a weekly payment option. That's $300 to $475 per week. And most importantly, the ROI kicks in immediately — you put money in one day, you get it back the same day, and so on.

Now let's look at the media approach and run the numbers — fair warning, brace yourselves. I'm sharing my own figures, what all of this actually cost me.

Launching 1 girl on each of the platforms listed above (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pornhub) will run you the following amounts — and keep in mind, in this scenario I'm only quoting the ad budget + consumables, excluding salaries or payments to third-party contractors.

A solid, quality launch costs:

  • Instagram — from $1,000 per month + staff costs (SMM + marketer);
  • TikTok — from $500 per month;
  • YouTube — varies, but mine came out to $1,400 per month, which included paid promotion + video editor + SMM;
  • PornHub — from $1,000 per month + video editor + SMM.

So in total, properly launching a media presence for 1 girl — purely in terms of consumables and ad budget — costs $3,900 + staff salaries, etc. And based on my experience, the real minimum all-in cost to launch a media operation for 1 girl is around $5,000. That's not a small number. Which raises the question: why spend that much to build someone into a "somebody," taking on serious financial risk in the process.

Which brings us to the next point — money and earnings.

Revenue from a single profile across 2 scenarios

As we established earlier, running the first promotion method will cost you around $1,200–1,500 per month.

Given that the average ROI is 5x, the projected revenue from a single profile is $6,000 to $7,500.

Yes, those are the expected numbers in the first month — but don't forget that you're also building your fan base, and by the second month the average profile revenue will be around $8,000–10,000. The fan base keeps growing and compounds like a snowball. By the third month you can realistically target $10,000–$12,000 per profile.

That's already a solid average result. You can do more — personally, on the classic method I consistently average $15,000–$16,000~ per profile, which I consider a good benchmark, though I know people pulling $18,000–$20,000 with this kind of traffic.

And to wrap up the earnings discussion — in my view, the ceiling for the first promotion method is around $20,000 per profile. That's what I've seen firsthand. I'm not interested in theorizing — I'm a practitioner.

As for the media approach — well, guys, I think you already understand that it's all about the long game, and it works like a snowball. But at a baseline level, you're looking at a minimum of $15,000–$20,000 per profile by month 3. It's extremely hard to project beyond that, because frankly there's no ceiling here. Western stars have made and continue to make over $1 million a day. It all comes down to how popular your model becomes.

So if you want to develop girls in the media direction, you need to be crystal clear about one thing — building a media presence for a girl means:

  • Hard work
  • High cost
  • Long timeline

But in return, you'll be able to reach a completely different level of earnings from your models — by building a fan base around them and generating a large audience of people who follow your model.

Looking at my own numbers, through media I consistently generate $20,000–$25,000 and above per profile — and my personal record for a single profile in one month was $89,000. I consider that a very strong result, even though there's still room to grow.

Given everything outlined above, each person chooses their own promotion method based on their budget, values, knowledge, and skill set.

But what do I use?

I use everything. For a single profile, I run both the classic promotion method and the media approach simultaneously. This gives me the following advantages:

  • Stable monthly income, since each girl is driven by traffic from at least 6 sources — if one underperforms, the drop is minimal.
  • High profile metrics, as both promotion methods 1 + 2 are effectively combined, resulting in an average of $30K+ per month across profiles.
  • Growth potential. With the classic method, there simply is none — it's cash here and now, with no visibility into tomorrow. By using media buying, I'm building a foundation, a snowball that will eventually roll me toward even bigger earnings in this niche...
  • I'm ahead of 70–75% of all agencies in Ukraine. There are guys who are even stronger, but they also started earlier. I launched my agency in 2021, and from 2019 through the end of 2020 I was working for the very first agencies in Ukraine.

So my personal advice: start with the first method, finish with both.

And now for the takeaways from all of this...

Takeaways

I have to say, the trilogy of posts turned out quite diverse, and with this article I tried to summarize all the key points that might be of interest to you.

Promotion is a complex thing, the work is fairly specific — but once you step into this space, you won't be leaving, because if you look at history, pornography existed long before our era: cave drawings, sculptures, paintings inside pyramids, and so on. This means and proves the fact that as long as humans exist, as long as they have the function of reproduction, the adult industry will be alive and generating revenue. Thousands of years have passed, and 18+ content is still in demand.

So if you enter adult once and keep pace with the trends, you can say with confidence that you'll be working here for the better part of your life — because there is one solid rule proven by time: porn was, is, and always will be.

In this article I only scratched the surface of the promotion topic — more detailed insights can be found in my Telegram channel.
