How the Prediction Market Works: A Polymarket Case Study

Decentralized platforms in the crypto market are steadily gaining ground and attracting users from around the world. Today, you can profit not only from crypto itself, but also from tokenized stocks and predictions on various events.

In this article, we break down how the prediction market works and how Western crypto investors are making money on it.

The Basic Mechanics of Prediction Markets

A prediction market is a platform where users place bets on future events — not in the format of classic gambling, but as exchange-style trading: users buy options whose price depends on how likely the market considers a given outcome to be.

If the prediction is correct, the option pays out $1. If not, the stake is lost. The value of a contract before the event resolves is based on the market's probability assessment. For example, a deal between Israel and Hamas by August 15 is currently priced at 6%.

Buying options worth $50 on a positive outcome could return $833 — in theory, that's a 16x, but in practice traders rarely manage to close such deals. That said, there are cases that have inspired many newcomers to enter the niche.

The key advantage of prediction markets is the ability to exit at any point before the event resolves. For example, if an investor bought options worth $100 at 6 cents and the price rose to 30 cents within a day, they can lock in profit and close the position — though they'll need to wait for someone to buy those options off the market.

The leading platform in the prediction market niche is Polymarket. Launched in 2020, it quickly gained widespread attention. In 2024, cumulative trading volume exceeded $9 billion, with more than 300,000 active traders.

To place a bet on any event, users need to fund their account with cryptocurrency. The platform has no fees and no KYC. There are downsides, however. In disputed situations, the final say belongs to UMA — token holders who vote on the outcome of an event. There have been cases where their decisions proved controversial, sparking backlash from users.

How Much Can You Earn on Polymarket

The prediction market is interesting not only conceptually, but also as a money-making tool. Every investor chooses their own strategy, but Polymarket is typically used to chase big multipliers — for example, turning $10 into $1,000.

Some top traders enter positions with significant sums just to capture a modest 10–15% on top of their stake.

Sometimes crypto traders focus exclusively on one category of predictions, and this approach can generate solid ROI.

The Palai editorial team tested Polymarket at some point and got a feel for the platform's mechanics. Most predictions turned a profit — including the bet on Usyk vs. Fury. Options were bought at 55 cents and sold at 100.

The P. Diddy case also delivered solid returns. Betting against the most predictable outcome of an event often generates profit in defiance of conventional logic.

On top of that, the platform offers attractive bonuses for option holders on certain events. For investors with large volumes, bonuses can reach $100–200 at a time.

Overall, Polymarket is an interesting tool with significant potential. As long as you're not gambling recklessly, it's entirely possible to profit on rock-solid events — or go against the market and hold positions through to the expected outcome.
