The EU Has Begun Enforcing New AI Transparency Rules

As of August 2, 2026, the provisions of Article 50 of the AI Act have entered into force across the European Union, establishing mandatory transparency requirements for the use of artificial intelligence systems. These apply to companies that deploy chatbots, generative AI, and other user-facing systems.

Under the new rules, users must be informed when they are interacting with an AI system, and generated or manipulated content must be labeled in cases specified by law. Exemptions apply only to certain areas, such as law enforcement activities or content that poses no risk of deception.

Companies that fail to comply with the transparency requirements face fines of up to €15 million or 3% of their total annual worldwide turnover — whichever is higher.
